      They are closely associated with the streptococci via cell-cell coaggregation as well as metabolic complementation—lactic acid produced by the streptococci serves as major carbon source for veillonellae, and the consequential lactate removal raises local pH, thus relieving the streptococci from toxicity of their own metabolic waste.
