Etymology

edit

From Proto-Indo-European *werp- (to spin, rake). Cognate with Latvian vērpt (to spin), Old Prussian etwiērpt (to forgive), powiērpt (to leave), Old Church Slavonic вьрпсти (vĭrpsti, to pluck, tear off, rake), Hittite [script needed] (warp-ᶻᶦ, to wash, bathe, rub). The traditionally compared Ancient Greek ῥᾰ́πτω (rháptō, to sew together, stitch) is likely not cognate.[1]
