Etymology edit

From Proto-Norse *ᚹᚨᛃᛖᛊᚨᛚᛁᛉ (*wajesaliʀ /wajēsālīʀ/), equivalent to ve- (miserably, (very) poorly) +‎ sæll (well, fortunate, happy) (compare veill from Proto-Norse *ᚹᚨᛃᛖᚺᚨᛁᛚᚨᛉ (*wajehailaʀ) and also Proto-Norse ᚹᚨᛃᛖᛗᚨᚱᛁᛉ (wajemariʀ /wajēmārīʀ/, ill reputed, infamous)). This word must be fairly old; there is no i-umlaut on the second element. Compare with the younger and more transparent ósæll.
