Etymology

edit

From Proto-Albanian *wāribā, further origin disputed, a semantic development from original "turning, whirling" to "clay pot" is reasonable, compare vorbull and vorbëtirë and toponyms which unlikely would be named after an object but rather than a whirlpool or other natural phenomenons, thus compare "Maja e Vorbës".[1][2] The countless derivations of this word speak in favour of an inherited word rather than a borrowing, which, naturally, would not deliver many word formations relatively compared to inherited ones. Could also be an ancient loanword of Ancient Greek ἀμφορεύς (amphoreús).
