Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *wulgī, from Proto-Indo-European *wl̥kʷíh₂s (she-wolf), from *wĺ̥kʷos (wolf), whence ulfr (wolf). Cognate with Sanskrit वृकी (vṛkī, she-wolf), Lithuanian vi̇̀lkė (she-wolf) and Proto-Slavic *vьlčìca.
