The original constructed form is *äje ("great, father"). Cognates with slightly differing meanings in several related languages: Sami áddjá (old male relative), Udmurt ajy (ajy, father, male), Karelian äijä (a lot, great, tall, many), Ludic and Veps äi (a lot).[1]
