Via other European languages, ultimately from Latin alchēmia, from Arabic اَلْكِيمِيَاء (al-kīmiyāʔ), from Ancient Greek χυμείᾱ (khumeíā, “art of alloying metals”) (which contains the suffix -είᾱ (-eíā), Latvian -ija).
