Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek βυθίζω (buthízō),[1] from βυθός (buthós, depth) +‎ -ίζω (-ízō, verbal suffix).

  1. to sink, submerge
    Synonym: βουλιάζω (vouliázo)
  2. to immerse, plunge, submerge
    Synonym: βουτάω (voutáo)
  3. (nautical) to scuttle (deliberately sink one's own ship)
