Inherited from Byzantine Greek ἐρωτεύομαι (erōteúomai), from ἔρωτ(ας) (érōt(as)) + -εύομαι (-évomai, suffix forming passive verbs), of active -εύω (-évo). ἐρωτ- from the accusative τὸν ἔρωτα (tòn érōta) of the Ancient Greek noun ἔρως (ho érōs).[1]
