From Ottoman Turkish قره‌گوزلق (karagözlük, Karagöz-ness, being like Karagöz) from Ottoman Turkish قره‌گوز (karagöz, lit. Black eye), the name of the lead character in the traditional Ottoman puppet play of the same name Karagöz, see Karagöz and Hacivat on Wikipedia for more.
