From πετ(ώ) (pet(ó)) + modern suffix -άω (-áo). From Koine Greek πετῶ (petô), contracted form of πετάω (petáō) from Ancient Greek πέταμαι (pétamai), from Proto-Indo-European *péth₂eti (to fly) from the root *peth₂- (literally to spread one’s wings).
