From Proto-Slavic *verdьnъ (worthy). Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary does not distinguish between this form and Etymology 2, but thorough analysis demonstrates that the etymons are distinct. Cognate with Serbo-Croatian врије́дан (worthy), Macedonian вреден (vreden, valuable).
