Originally Russian word formed from the onomatopoeia гра (gra) +‎ -ач (-ač). Cf. ка́ркать (kárkatʹ) and other similar words with onomatopoeic origin, such as Ukrainian грак (hrak, rook) and крук (kruk, raven).
