Inherited from Proto-Slavic *jebàti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *jebtei, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃yébʰeti, from *h₃yebʰ-. Cognate with Ancient Greek οἴφω (oíphō), Sanskrit यभति (yabhati).
