From Proto-Mordvinic *kuləms, from Proto-Uralic *kale-. Cognates include Finnish kuolla, Eastern Mari колаш (kolaš), Udmurt кулыны (kulyny) and Hungarian hal, Northern Mansi хо̄луӈкве (hōluňkwe).
