Etymology edit

The origin is uncertain. Usually connected with ոստ (ost). For the initial կ- (k-) compare Russian косты́ль (kostýlʹ), Slovene kostílja (Celtis australis; whip-handle made of this tree). Perhaps of substrate origin. See also Middle Armenian կոստղ (kostġ).
