From Arabic بُوق (būq, “trumpet”).^[1] It should be borne in mind that Middle Armenian պ (p) here represents a [b]. For the transferred anatomical sense compare the sense development of Old Armenian փող (pʻoł).

He assumes that the original meaning was "neck" (i.e. the turning organ) and for the sense development compares Latin collum (“neck”), Proto-Germanic *halsaz (“neck”) from Proto-Indo-European *kʷel- (“to turn”); also Russian шея (šeja) against Serbo-Croatian ошијати (“to turn around”). Finally, J̌ahukyan does not exclude the possibility of contamination of the sense "neck" with the sense "throat" deriving from *bʰewg- (“to consume”) (see բուծանեմ (bucanem) for this root).
