Numeral edit
שְׁמוֹנָה • (sh'moná) m (construct שְׁמוֹנַת (sh'monát), feminine שְׁמוֹנֶה (sh'moné))
Usage notes edit
- In Modern Hebrew, when the numbers three through ten modify a definite masculine noun and are directly preceding it, the construct form is used:
- שְׁמוֹנָה סְפָרִים ― sh'moná s'farím ― eight books
- שְׁמוֹנַת הַסְּפָרִים ― sh'monát has'farím ― the eight books
- The construct form is not used for higher numbers ending in eight, such as twenty-eight:
- עֶשְׂרִים וּשְׁמוֹנָה הַסְּפָרִים ― 'esrím ush'moná has'farím ― the twenty-eight books
- In colloquial Modern Hebrew, the form שְׁמוֹנֶה (shmóne) is often used regardless of gender.
