Derived from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀓𑀟𑁆𑀟𑁆 (*kaḍḍ, “be rough”), attested as Sanskrit कड्डति (kaḍḍati, “is hard or rough”). Cognate with Nepali कडा (kaḍā).
