Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀚𑀫𑁆𑀫𑀤𑀺 (*jammadi), from Sanskrit यम्यते (yamyáte), from the root यम् (yam). Cognate with Gujarati જામવું (jāmvũ), Marathi जमणे (jamṇe), Bengali জমা (joma), Assamese জমা (zoma).

  1. to solidify, freeze
    पानी जम रहा हैpānī jam rahā haithe water is freezing
    ठंडा है, लेकिन जम नहीं रहा है
    ṭhaṇḍā hai, lekin jam nahī̃ rahā hai
    it's cold, but it's not freezing
