Etymology edit
From Proto-Indo-European *(s)tig-s-nó-s, from *(s)teyg- (“to be sharp”); with an unexplained lengthening of the first vowel. Related to तेजस् (tejas, “sharpness”), तिग्म (tigma) and also to Avestan 𐬙𐬌𐬖𐬭𐬀 (tiγra, “sharp”), Persian تیز (tez, “sharp”).
