Inherited from Prakrit 𑀧𑀸𑀡𑀻𑀅 (pāṇīa), from Sanskrit पानीय (pānīya, “water, drink”). Cognate with Old Hindi पांनी (pā̃nī), Old Marathi 𑘢𑘰𑘜𑘲 (pāṇī), Old Gujarati पाणी (pāṇī).
