From Proto-Tai *ɲamᴮ (to step on). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨿ᩵ᩣᩴ, Khün ᨿ᩵ᩣᩴ, Lao ຍ່ຳ (nyam) or ຢ່ຳ (yam), ᦍᧄᧈ (yam¹) or ᦶᦍᧄᧈ (yaem¹), Zhuang yaemh.
