From Proto-Tai *rwoːᴮ (to leak). Compare Old Chinese (OC *roːs, “to leak”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩁ᩠ᩅᩫ᩵, Lao ຮົ່ວ (hūa), Shan ႁူဝ်ႈ (), Ahom 𑜍𑜢𑜤𑜈𑜫 (rüw), Zhuang roh, Nong Zhuang roh, Zuojiang Zhuang ruoh.
