From Proto-Tai *kepᴰ (to pick). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨠᩮᩢ᩠ᨷ, Lao ເກັບ (kep), ᦵᦂᧇ (k̇eb), Tai Dam ꪹꪀꪸꪚ, Tai Nüa ᥐᥥᥙᥱ (kěp), Shan ၵဵပ်း (káep), Ahom 𑜀𑜢𑜆𑜫 (kip). Compare Khmer កើប (kaəp, to gather up).
