From Proto-Tai *niəwᴮ (“urine”), from Middle Chinese 尿 (MC newH, “urine; to piss”). Cognate with Lao ຍ່ຽວ (nyiāu), Lü ᦵᦍᧁᧈ (yew¹), Tai Dam ꪹꪑꪸ꪿ꪫ, Shan ယဵဝ်ႈ (yāeo), Ahom 𑜊𑜢𑜈𑜫 (jʸiw), Zhuang nyouh, Nong Zhuang nyuh, Saek หญู้.
