Inherited from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *bay (pea, bean, small weight or coin), an areal word in Mainland Southeast Asia. Cognate with Mizo [Term?] (, bean); for more cognates outside of Tibeto-Burman, compare perhaps Old Chinese (OC *paːds, “cowrie”) (STEDT: paì "peas, beans, lentils").
