From Old Georgian მწყემსი (mc̣q̇emsi), from Proto-Georgian-Zan *mc₁q̇es₁-. Cognate with Mingrelian ჭყიში (č̣q̇iši) and Laz მჭკეში (mç̌ǩeşi).
