A male chaffinch

Etymology edit

Cognate with Mingrelian კვინჩა (ḳvinča), კინჩა (ḳinča, chaffinch) and Laz კვინჩი (ǩvinçi), კინჩი (ǩinçi, bird). In Laz, the meaning seems to be wider than in Georgian and Mingrelian, for which compare Svan კალმახ (ḳalmax, fish; trout) and Georgian კალმახი (ḳalmaxi, trout), where Svan meaning has widened. On this basis, Chikobava supposes a connection of the forms to Avar хӏинчӏ (ḥʳinčʼ, bird).
