Etymology edit

From ἐπι- (epi-, on, upon; on top of; all over) +‎ κοινός (koinós, common; general, public). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱóm (beside, by, near, with) + *-yós (suffix forming adjectives from noun stems). Compare γένος ἐπίκοινον (génos epíkoinon, common gender).
