Etymology edit
Compound of 塗り (nuri, “smearing or spreading onto something”, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 塗る nuru, “to paint; to smear or spread onto something”) + 薬 (kusuri, “medicine”).[1][2][3] The kusuri changes to gusuri as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
