Compound of 塗り (nuri, smearing or spreading onto something, the (れん)(よう)(けい) (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of the verb 塗る nuru, “to paint; to smear or spread onto something”) +‎ (kusuri, medicine).[1][2][3] The kusuri changes to gusuri as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
