Glyph origin edit
Derived from two different stacking patterns of 日 (“sun”) and 九 (“nine”), with unclear connotations.
Etymology edit
Possibly a dialectally-preserved disyllabic form of 角 (OC *kroːɡ, *ɡ·roːɡ, “corner; horn”). Unattested in Old Chinese or Middle Chinese literature, its usage seems rather recent.
Cognate with 角落 (OC *kroːg g·raːg, “corner”), an emphatic form of 角.
