Etymology

Compound of 木屋 (kiya, lumber shed; lumber seller) +‎ (machi, town; district). So named for the number of lumber sellers in that part of Kyōto in the early Edo period.[1] Now known for 旅館 (ryokan, inns) and 料亭 (ryōtei, high-end restaurants).
