Compound of 木屋 (kiya, lumber shed; lumber seller) +‎  (machi, town; district).

  1. a district and street in Kyōto, running north and south along the Takase River
So named for the large number of 木屋 (kiya, lumber sellers) who were formerly located in this area. Now known for 旅館 (ryokan, inns) and 料亭 (ryōtei, high-end restaurants).
