Etymology

Compound of やい (yai), the イ音便 (​i-onbin) form of 焼(や)き (yaki), the 連用形(れんようけい) (ren'yōkei) of verb 焼(や)く (yaku, “to burn”) + 津(つ) (tsu, “harbor, port”). The tsu changes to zu as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
