EtymologyEdit

Historically /zauri/. The vowel sequence /au/ regularly contracts into long IPA(key): [oː] via regular phonological rules becoming zōri. In late Middle Japanese, the initial IPA(key): [zo] temporarily becomes affricate IPA(key): [dʒo].
