Etymology 1 edit
There are various theories about its origin.
- From omitting of く (ku) from 薬師 (yakushi, “medicine seller”).
- From omitting of ま (ma) from 山師 (yamashi, “fraud”).
- From omitting of 武 (bu) from 野武士 (yabushi, “wild samurai”). Yabushi sold medicine due to their poorness.
- From omitting of 郎 (rō) from 弥四郎 (Yashirō). Yashirō was the personal name of a successful medicine-seller; others called themselves Yashi after his success.
