Dutch edit

Etymology edit

From AFC Ajax, with a suffix apparently based on Ancient Greek -ίδης (-ídēs) (compare for example Atreïde).

The -c- in this word may derive from the fact that the stem of the name Aiāx in Latin is Aiāc- (thus, for example, the genitive form is Aiācis, not *Aiāxis), and suffixes are generally attached to the stem of Latin and Ancient Greek words and not to their nominative forms. (But note that the stem of the word is different in the original Ancient Greek to which the soccer club ultimately owes its name, for which see the lemma Αἴας (Aías).)
