Etymology edit

Gikun word derived by applying Chinese-derived spelling 神聖 (sacredness), a term which decomposes into (God) + (holy), to realis form of native Japanese verb きよむ (kiyomu, to sanctify) thus denoting sanctification as God making something holy.
