Etymology edit
Borrowed from Middle Low German vlīse, from a nasalized dental extension of Proto-Indo-European *(s)pley- (“to split, splice”), whence also Proto-Germanic *splītaną (“to split”). Cognate with Swedish flis (“wood chips”).
