From Middle High German līste (“strip of cloth”), from Old High German līsta. The native German term became Leiste, while Liste is due to a 17th-century loan from Italian lista, which was itself loaned from Old or Middle High German and via "strip of paper" had developed the meaning of "columnar catalogue of names or items". More at list.
