First attested as millingi in 721-722. Derived from Old Dutch Milo (“a personal name”) or Millo (“a personal name”) with collectivising suffix -ing-. No etymological relationship with Latin milia (“mile”). The element aan de Rijn ("on the Rhine") was added later.
