From Middle High German rippe (also ruppe, ribbe, ribe, riebe), from Old High German rippa, ribba, (also rippi, ribbi), from Proto-West Germanic *ribi, from Proto-Germanic *ribją (“rib, reef”).
Cognate with English rib, Dutch rib (“rib”), Low German ribbe (“rib”), Old Norse rif (“rib, reef”).
