Etymology edit

Borrowing from 18th century Dutch schabbelun, from earlier Middle Low German schampeliōn, schaplūn (pattern, shape, model), ultimately from Old French eschandillon (standard) (see French échantillon). Cognate with Dutch sjabloon.
