Etymology edit

Sino-Vietnamese word from 尊室, composed of (august) and (chamber), originally a non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 宗室 (imperial chamber(lain), SV: Tông Thất), with tông perhaps euphemistically replaced with tôn to avoid referencing Emperor Thiệu Trị, whose taboo name was Nguyễn Phúc Miên Tông. A name prescribed by Emperor Minh Mạng upon male descendants of the Nguyễn Phúc lineage. Compare Tôn Nữ and tôn giáo.
