"A statement given as a warning to an individual who has greatly offended one's dignity or has acted insolently." Equinox 02:41, 31 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

It seems blatant nonsense to me. (Employee to boss: Hey fuckface, you’re the most incompetent nincompoop in the whole joint. Boss, in a threatening tone: I’m not the one. Employee: Oh, I’m so sorry, please don’t fire me; I have to feed three wives and seventeen kids.)  --Lambiam 03:44, 1 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
I interpreted it as being like the old children's response ("I'm rubber, you're glue, what you say bounces off me and sticks to you") -- in other words, saying I am not the one your words apply to, you are. 2407:7000:982F:D873:6951:E395:D2F:636 06:54, 1 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
In a longer phrase it could work (though the definition is still rubbish), e.g. "You want me to save money? I'm not the one splurging our cash on shoes!" — but not on its own. Equinox 13:02, 1 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
use of this phrase in this clip at the 7:42 mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xz4WGLV3f08
The YouTube clip is a Jerry Springer episode ("King-Kong With The Ding-Dong!"). Transcription of portion: MAN: Why not tell the truth straight off the back [sic]? WOMAN: First of all, be clear: it's [sic] a lot of dresses up here. [Pointing to women in audience.] MAN: First of all [WOMAN, talking over him: "no-no-no-no-no-no!"] you need to watch your attitude. I'm not the one. [AUDIENCE bays.] I'm not the one. Equinox 18:31, 3 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Ironically I have heard this used a ton, especially in AAVE spaces, but I do feel that it'd be hard to cite just based on the usage of the phrase. AG202 (talk) 12:26, 6 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
You'd think that, if in wide or trendy use, it would be found in dialog in contemporary fiction or on UseNet. DCDuring (talk) 15:35, 6 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
It looks to me like an attempt by someone who's being accused or otherwise verbally attacked to turn the tables by asserting that someone else deserves the blame or whatever. It's inherently what one would say in the heat of the moment, generally when there's a group or an audience present, which isn't likely to be captured in print. If someone were writing it, they would probably fill out the ellipsis: "I'm not the one who [fill in the blank]." Chuck Entz (talk) 16:14, 6 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Exactly. I've really only seen it in tweets when it comes to "print" sources. I highly doubt that I would see it in UseNet, just knowing the demographics of that space. Edit: There are some examples illustrated in gif usage here (at the top): https://tenor.com/search/i-am-not-the-one-gifs that I assume primarily come from TV shows, though I'm not sure exactly what the criteria is for them. I've also seen some song lyrics & titles that involve it. AG202 (talk) 16:30, 6 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Is there a good source of publicly available information on the demographics of UseNet and other online media? DCDuring (talk) 18:07, 6 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure specifically about Usenet, but Pew Research has a good study on Americans’ Internet Access from 2000-2015 which, when combined with the fact that tech as a field has historically excluded certain demographics, it makes sense that UseNet would not have nearly as much usage from that demographic, though it was an assumption. Just to make sure though, I actually searched up very common AAVE words in UseNet and some of the first results I got were groups & messages with very visceral racial slurs and people mocking Black folk and there were nearly as many other results, so it only reemphasized my initial thoughts.
