Welcome! edit

Welcome!

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy documenting how Wiktionary pages should be formatted. All entries should conform to this standard. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing page for a similar word, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Our Criteria for inclusion (CFI) define exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary, though it may be a bit technical and longwinded. The most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • The FAQ aims to answer most of your remaining questions, and there are several help pages that you can browse for more information.
  • A glossary of our technical jargon, and some hints for dealing with the more common communication issues.
  • If you have anything to ask about or suggest, we have several discussion rooms. Feel free to ask any other editors in person if you have any problems or question, by posting a message on their talk page.

You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage. This shows which languages you know, so other editors know which languages you'll be working on, and what they can ask you for help with.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! If you have any questions, bring them to the Wiktionary:Information desk, or ask me on my talk page. If you do so, please sign your posts with four tildes: ~~~~ which automatically produces your username and the current date and time.

Again, welcome! — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 05:57, 28 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

More modern examples edit

Some of your entries use examples from Truyen Kieu. Can you add more modern examples? cảo thơm, đánh ghen, bỉ sắc tư phong Sinotransition (talk) 12:40, 24 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Sinotransition Sorry, but I just know these words in the context of Truyện Kiều. I'm not familiar with modern usages of these words. --ChemPro (talk) 00:21, 25 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Đánh ghen is well attested. The other two terms are possibly instances of code-switching between Chinese and Vietnamese. Sinotransition (talk) 03:56, 25 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Sinotransition I have added modern example sentences for the aforementioned entries. --ChemPro (talk) 00:21, 29 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Sorry but as a native speaker, I feel your example isn't natural. Sinotransition (talk) 04:04, 29 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
A term used in only one work is possibly not eligible for inclusion, according to WT:CFI.

For languages well documented on the Internet, three citations in which a term is used is the minimum number for inclusion in Wiktionary.

We should enlist an expert in the Vietnamese language for assistance. Sinotransition (talk) 04:12, 29 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Sinotransition Yes, I agree with you. --ChemPro (talk) 04:40, 29 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Pronunciation edit

Hey, could you add a pronunciation for the English language word Truong Sa? Compare to Hoang Sa and Trường_Sa#Pronunciation. I don't know Vietnamese at all, nor what this might sound like moved into English. Thanks for any help. --Geographyinitiative (talk) 01:31, 28 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Geographyinitiative Hey, but I have absolutely no clue when it comes to the pronunciation of English borrowings from Vietnamese. English is not my native language. Sorry to disappoint you. --ChemPro (talk) 11:15, 28 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

C:Botany edit

Hey, just so you know, this category is reserved for botany-related terminologies. Names of genera and species should instead be included in C:vi:Plants or its various subcategories. I am currently working to reclassify all of the plants-related entries that were incorrectly added to C:Botany in the past. Billcipher123 (talk) 17:24, 24 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Also check out Category:en:Botany and Category:en:Plants. Billcipher123 (talk) 17:29, 24 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Billcipher123 Okay, I wasn't aware of that. Thanks for pointing it out to me. I'll definitely keep it in mind in the future. --ChemPro (talk) 17:41, 24 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
