Welcome edit

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! Vininn126 (talk) 17:58, 13 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Dialects edit

I see your adding dialectal stuff. This is great! Something I've been wanting to do. You should be aware of the CFI. Sometimes stuff like that doesn't meet. I haven't seen anything that doesn't, but this is really something you should be aware of as you do this further. Thanks and keep it up. Vininn126 (talk) 19:37, 13 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Oh, and a second thing. You should be aware, Silesian is considered a separate language on Wiktionary. If you add a word with "Silesian", it means "Silesian POLISH" not Silesian proper. Also please use {{gl}} for parentheses. Vininn126 (talk) 19:40, 13 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Good work edit

Just wanna say you're crushing it. I wanted to mention be a bit careful with Doroszewski's dictionary, he has some weird unattestable stuff, but seeing as you already do citations most of the time (good work there, by the way), you are probably aware. Vininn126 (talk) 16:22, 28 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

@User:Vininn126 Thanks! :D It’s good you keep an eye on the Polish entries here. On Wikipedia I can rewrite a whole article twice while asking for feedback on the Project page and nobody answers haha. And yeah, I will be trying to find some more citations in the future I think.
I’d be very eager to add dialectal words, but it’s rather hard since firstly I don’t own a dialectal dictionary (Słownik gwar polskich is for 1000 zł on allegro so yeah…) so I must rely on scans online so it’s tedious to search for anything. Maybe I could find a library which has a copy. Secondly I bought myself a collection of dialectal texts in transcription, which is great but unfortunately there is no index of any sorts so I have to just read it and note down dialectal or nonstandard words. Thirdly dialectal words are often rare or nonexistant in online sources, and I cannot rely on most written ones either since authors repeatedly make basic mistakes when representing dialects (Reymont in Chłopi used bych, which is 1st person singular old and dialectal for bym, also for the 2nd and 3rd person…). And finally, since as you mentioned Silesian is considered a separate language here (although I’ve noticed quite a few words listed as Polish but with a gloss „(Upper Silesia)”), when I see a word that is shared by Silesian but also some neighboring Polish dialects (since North Slavic is a dialect continuum anyway and language borders are more or less arbitrary) and I can’t know where the speaker comes from I’m stuck. Although I could probably overcome these problems eventually it’s just very time consuming and I’m also working on other things so it might take a while.
Also, I find it rather disheartening that I can’t really add pronunciation to dialectal entries… Polish dialects differ very much especially in vocalism so this is rather important I think. Would it at least be possible to add phonetic transcription, from the sources I got my dialectal citations from, to the entry here, maybe it could be on the top and right underneath a rendition into Standard Polish orthography?
Cheers! MichaelTheSlav (talk) 16:57, 28 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
Don't forget that bych was also used for the aorist, as you can still see in Silesian. Also, we should probably move those Silesian terms. They were added before it was made an L2, I think. I can't wait for them to finish making that multivolume Silesian dictionary.
You can add multiple transcriptions to pl-p, as well as a qualifier. Vininn126 (talk) 17:06, 28 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

@User:Shumkichi Thanks! I’m not sure why you copied Vininn126’s message but whatever.
I would like to express my tremendous regret over me missing the period in the articles iskrzyć and skrzyć. I am profoundly sorry for causing you to have an aneurism. I solemnly promise to be more mindful of punctuation in the future. MichaelTheSlav (talk) 16:57, 1 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

@MichaelTheSlav Oo, to też studiujesz lingwistykę albo jakąś filologię? fajOwO Shumkichi (talk) 17:44, 1 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
Jeśli w książce wspomniane jest coś szczegółowo o jakimś słowie albo czymś to dopisuje tu bo właśnie etymologią i gwarami najbarziej sie interesuje. Ale w przyszłości na pewno nad tym też porządnie siąde. MichaelTheSlav (talk) 20:29, 1 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
