Etymology edit

From earlier abóbeda, from Old Galician-Portuguese boveda, possibly from the hypothetical Vulgar Latin word *volvita, alteration of Latin volūta, from volvere (to turn), but this presents serious phonetic difficulties. Compare Spanish and Galician bóveda. More likely of Germanic origin, from a Gothic *𐌱𐌿𐍅𐌹𐌸𐌰 (*buwiþa), from a derivative of Proto-Germanic *būaną (to dwell reside, build).

Pronunciation edit

  • Hyphenation: a‧bó‧ba‧da

Noun edit

abóbada f (plural abóbadas)

  1. (architecture) vault (arched ceiling)
    • 1851, Alexandre Herculano, A Abóbada, Imprensa Nacional, page 304:
a abóbada não caiu... a abóbada não cairá!
The vaulted ceiling did not fall, and shall never fall!
