From Proto-Albanian *aweisa, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewh₁-. More at aft[1]. Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *aus-o, reflecting Proto-Indo-European *aus- 'to light up, to dawn', where the cluster -*au- < -*af- is rendered as in Latin borrowings (cf. kafshë < Latin causa). The original meaning of the word might have been 'fire or lighting source' as well as 'dawn'.
