Etymology

Borrowed from Arabic أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللّٰهَ (ʔastaḡfiru llāha, literally “I ask forgiveness from Allah”).

1. (MLE, slang) An expression of disbelief, disapproval, surprise, shock, etc.

2. (Islam, literally) In the literal sense, "I seek forgiveness from Allah"; a short prayer of redemption; God forgive me.
3. (Islam) An expression of guilt or shame.
